Summary

The basic consumables in newspaper printing are newsprint and newsink. This guide is intended to serve as an information source for printers, pressroom foremen and technical management, providing facts on and advice for dealing with these everyday materials. In some cases, the guide will also give recommendations and suggest standards for the

industry.

The guide is divided into seven main sections, plus a set of appendices. The first five chapters are concerned with the properties, the quality control and the handling of the materials themselves. Chapters 6 and 7 concentrate on controlling the events when bringing the materials to interact in and with the press. The key words here are printability and runnability together with waste reduction and control that all lead to a high level of quality and productivity.

The IFRA Newsprint and Newsink Guide has been compiled and approved by the IFRA Newsprint Committee, a body of representatives from newspapers and the supplying industry in Europe and North America. The Management Board of IFRA acknowledges with many thanks the years of work and effort that were spent by the members of the production of this guide. Furthermore, IFRA owes a sincere debt of thanks to the many newspapers, institutions and individuals who have also contributed to this compilation.
